Arsenal Crash Out of Carabao Cup After Shock Defeat to League Two Fleetwood Town
Arsenal have been eliminated from the Carabao Cup after suffering a stunning 5-3 penalty shootout defeat to fourth-tier Fleetwood Town following a 1-1 draw at Highbury Stadium on Tuesday night.
The result marked one of the biggest upsets of the competition, with Fleetwood, who sit 18th in League Two, overcoming the Premier League champions to book their place in the quarter-finals.
Fleetwood took a surprise lead in the 21st minute when Aaron Loupalo-Bi beat Arsenal’s young defender Marli Salmon before firing past goalkeeper Illan Meslier. The hosts defended resolutely against Arsenal’s attempts to respond, frustrating the visitors during a difficult first half.
Arsenal drew level five minutes after the restart when Viktor Gyökeres turned home a cross from debutant Ceadach O’Neill. The equaliser gave the visitors renewed hope, but they failed to find a winner despite creating several opportunities.
Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch played a decisive role in keeping his side in the contest, producing important saves late in normal time, including efforts from Ben White and Martin Ødegaard.
Arsenal’s task became more difficult when teenager Max Dowman was sent off late in the match following a confrontation with Fleetwood’s Harrison Neal. The tie subsequently went to penalties after the teams remained level at the end of regulation time.
Fleetwood converted all five of their penalties, while Lynch saved Bruno Guimarães’ attempt for Arsenal. Teenage defender Conor Haughey then scored the decisive kick, sparking celebrations among the home supporters and a pitch invasion at the final whistle.
The match also featured an unusual interruption early in the first half after a drone was spotted above the stadium, forcing officials to suspend play for several minutes before the game resumed.
Fleetwood manager Matt Lawlor celebrated an extraordinary night for the club, whose players had held their own against one of England’s leading sides despite their struggles in the league. The victory sends the League Two outfit into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals and leaves Arsenal reflecting on a costly cup exit.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had made several changes to his team, with the Gunners also facing a demanding run of fixtures. They are due to return to Premier League action against Liverpool on Sunday, November 1.
For Fleetwood, the result will be remembered as a landmark achievement, while Arsenal must now turn their attention to their remaining domestic and European commitments.
