Some defenders stop opponents through physical strength. Others rely on anticipation, intelligence and an extraordinary understanding of the game.

Isa Shofoluwe possessed all those qualities.

Known across Nigerian football as the ๐——๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐——๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ and ๐— ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐——๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ, Isa earned the admiration of supporters through his composure, exceptional timing and ability to read danger before it developed.

But there was another name by which we knew him in our historic Flying Eagles generation.

And behind that name lies one of the most memorable stories of our football journey.

Isa was born in Abeokuta, Ogun State, and developed into one of Nigeriaโ€™s most technically accomplished defenders.

His football education began with attacking instincts. During his primary-school years, he played outside right, learning to dribble, accelerate and manipulate the ball in tight spaces.

Those early experiences remained evident even after he developed into a defender.

He could anticipate an opponentโ€™s movement, intercept passes and escape pressure without always resorting to physical confrontation.

His intelligence helped compensate for his relatively modest height.

Isa could operate across defensive positions, and his versatility became one of his greatest strengths.

These qualities eventually earned him national recognition.

Isa represented Nigeria at the FIFA World Youth Championship in Mexico, held from June 2 to June 19, 1983.

Under the late Coach Christopher Udemezue, our Flying Eagles became Nigeriaโ€™s first representatives at a FIFA World Cup tournament at any level.

At Mexico โ€˜83, Isa faced talented young footballers from some of the worldโ€™s leading football nations.

One memorable encounter was Nigeriaโ€™s goalless draw against the Netherlands, whose squad featured Marco van Basten and Gerald Vanenburg.

Isaโ€™s defensive intelligence and composure were important qualities against technically gifted opponents.

The experience provided an opportunity to demonstrate that Nigerian defenders could compete through skill and anticipation as well as strength.

Within our Flying Eagles team, three players acquired a nickname that reflected their footballing intelligence:

The Igbo word Uche is associated with thought and understanding.

Our Yoruba-speaking teammates understood the idea through Ologbon, meaning a clever or wise person.

Among Hausa speakers, Hankali conveyed intelligence and sound judgment.

Different languages, but one appreciation of the importance of thinking quickly.

Isaโ€™s football perfectly represented that nickname.

He could look in one direction and move the ball in another. His body positioning could persuade an attacker to make the wrong decision.

A subtle movement could create an interception opportunity before the opponent realized what had happened.

Our late coach Christopher Udemezue also embraced the nickname.

Whenever our performances fell below his expectations, he would fold his arms, stretch his neck forward and deliver his familiar verdict in Nigerian Pidgin:

โ€œ๐—จ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ฒ, ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐—ป๐—ผ ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—บ ๐—ผ!โ€

It meant that we were not playing the intelligent football he expected from us.

His delivery was humorous, but his message was serious.

He demanded one-touch passing, effective ball control, intelligent movement and teamwork.

For Isa, those principles became enduring characteristics of his football.

On August 14, 1983, Nigeriaโ€™s Green Eagles drew 0โ€“0 with Morocco in Benin City during qualification for the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations.

With the decisive return encounter approaching, Coach Adegboye Onigbinde needed reinforcements.

His attention turned to the Flying Eagles, then preparing for the West African Football Union tournament at Bembo Games Village, Ibadan.

Three young players received the senior national-team call.

Isa Shofoluwe, Chibuzor Ehilegbu and Paul Lucky Okoku.

The Three Uches.

Isa had only recently experienced international youth football in Mexico.

Now he was preparing to face Moroccoโ€™s senior national team in a decisive away qualifier.

We travelled with the senior delegation from Ibadan through Lagos and Madrid before arriving in Morocco.

For Isa, this was another opportunity to prove that a young footballer could be entrusted with major international responsibility.

During our stay in Morocco, the legendary Radio Nigeria commentator Ernest Okonkwo encountered the three of us together in the teamโ€™s hotel dining room.

He recognized our shared background under Coach Christopher Udemezue and affectionately referred to us as:

โ€œ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—จ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐˜‡๐˜‚๐—ฒ ๐—•๐—ผ๐˜†๐˜€.โ€

It was a memorable acknowledgment of the coach who had prepared us for national-team responsibilities.

But Isa was about to become part of another memorable chapter.

Morocco was a formidable opponent.

The 1976 African champions possessed experienced footballers, technical ability and the advantage of playing before their home supporters.

Isa, Chibuzor and I were young players entering an atmosphere that demanded composure and courage.

As I remember it, all three of us started the match and remained involved through extra time.

The contest finished goalless after 120 minutes.

Nigeria prevailed 4โ€“3 on penalties, qualifying for the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations in Cรดte dโ€™Ivoire.

Goalkeeper Peter Rufai was among the defining figures of that dramatic occasion.

Following our qualification, Coach Adegboye Onigbinde embraced the three of us and affectionately called us:

โ€œ๐— ๐˜† ๐—š๐—ผ๐—น๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—•๐—ผ๐˜†๐˜€.โ€

For Isa, the match represented an important step in his progression from youth international football into Nigeriaโ€™s senior national team.

The Three Uches had become Onigbindeโ€™s Golden Boys.

What made that period particularly remarkable was that Isa, Chibuzor and I continued to have responsibilities with both the Flying Eagles and the senior Green Eagles.

We had not permanently abandoned youth international football after receiving the senior invitation.

Our experiences included the 1983 World Youth Championship, senior national-team duty against Morocco and the Flying Eaglesโ€™ subsequent WAFU campaign.

That progression reflected the confidence Nigerian coaches placed in the abilities of young players.

Isa continued representing Nigeria at the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations in Cรดte dโ€™Ivoire.

The Green Eagles advanced through the competition and reached the final against Cameroon on March 18, 1984.

Although Nigeria lost 3โ€“1, the team returned home with silver medals.

For Isa, it was an important international accomplishment.

He had progressed from the 1983 Flying Eagles to a senior continental final within a year.

Isaโ€™s club career further established his reputation.

He represented respected Nigerian clubs, including ITT, Abiola Babes and Julius Berger.

At Abiola Babes, he became part of a formidable football generation that reached four consecutive national cup finals between 1984 and 1987, winning in 1985 and 1987.

His defensive ability, versatility and composure attracted widespread admiration.

He later pursued professional football in Belgium, adding an overseas chapter to his career.

Four years after the 1984 achievement, Isa returned to the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Nigeria again reached the final against Cameroon.

Although Nigeria finished as runners-up, Isa had now participated in two AFCON silver-medal campaigns.

During that tournament, another memorable personal encounter occurred.

He finally met Ernest Okonkwo, the broadcaster who had made his defensive nickname famous.

Isa later recalled his surprise and pleasure at meeting the man whose commentary had helped turn his footballing ability into a nationally recognized identity.

The names ๐——๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐——๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ and ๐— ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐——๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ would remain associated with him.

Isa passed away on February 9, 2021, at the age of 53.

His death was mourned throughout Nigerian football.

Former teammates, coaches and supporters remembered a player whose accomplishments reflected technical excellence and commitment.

For those of us who shared the historic Flying Eagles generation with him, his passing represented the loss of a treasured colleague and friend.

When Nigerians remember Isa Shofoluwe, they should remember more than a gifted defender.

They should remember a footballer whose intelligence made him exceptional.

A young player who competed on the world stage in Mexico.

One of the Three Uches who answered the senior national-team call against Morocco.

A member of the Green Eagles who earned two AFCON silver medals.

And a footballer whose outstanding ability inspired one of Nigerian sports commentaryโ€™s most memorable nicknames.

Isa, you were one of those rare defenders who could make difficult football situations appear simple.

Your anticipation, skill and intelligence brought distinction to Nigerian football.

But beyond those accomplishments, I will always remember the shared experiences of our generation.

The Three Uches.

The Udemezue Boys.

Onigbindeโ€™s Golden Boys.
