When I remember the young footballers who shared our historic 1983 Flying Eagles journey, certain personalities return to mind with extraordinary clarity.
Some teammates were outspoken. Others entertained everyone with loud jokes and constant conversation.
And then there was Bright Benson Ohiku.
Affectionately known as ๐ข๐ป๐๐ถ๐ฏ๐ผ, Bright possessed a quieter form of humour. His remarks could be delivered so calmly that their full meaning sometimes became apparent only after everyone had started laughing.
He was a pleasant person to have around.
Friendly, composed and confident in his abilities, Bright contributed to the atmosphere that made our Flying Eagles generation memorable.

Bright was associated with Jos, a city with a distinguished footballing tradition and a history of producing talented Nigerian players.
The name Onyibo became part of his footballing identity among teammates.
But what I remember most was not the nickname itself.
It was the person.
Bright was confident without needing to draw constant attention to himself.
He possessed the self-assurance expected of a talented footballer competing for recognition at the national level.
He also understood the importance of relationships within a team.
Footballers spend countless hours together during training camps, travelling, eating and preparing for difficult matches.
A teammate who brings humour, understanding and a pleasant disposition into that environment contributes something valuable beyond what spectators see on the pitch.
Bright was one of those teammates.

Brightโs involvement with our historic Flying Eagles generation is preserved in the photographs and records of that remarkable period.
One particularly valuable photograph shows him standing alongside Chibuzor Ehilegbu, Paul Lucky Okoku and other members of the squad associated with our qualification campaign against Guinea.
Under the late Coach Christopher Udemezue and his assistant Isiaka Yakubu, we assembled a team determined to make an impression on Nigerian football.
On January 8, 1983, Nigeria defeated Guinea 2โ0 in Lagos and achieved its first qualification for a FIFA World Cup tournament at any level.
It was an achievement that transformed the ambitions of Nigerian youth football.
Bright belonged to that pioneering generation.

One aspect of Brightโs life that deserves attention is his later association with football coaching.
My recollection is that Bright remained involved in the development and instruction of players, extending his relationship with the game beyond his active playing years.
I also remember seeing footage associated with his coaching work, showing him demonstrating football techniques.
That image is particularly meaningful.
Teaching football requires patience, practical knowledge and the ability to communicate with younger players.
Former footballers who become coaches help preserve the experience gained through years of competition.
Their influence can continue through the players they instruct and encourage.
Brightโs commitment to football deserves to be remembered as part of that wider legacy.

Brightโs connection with Jos remained important to the story I remember.
For many footballers of our generation, friendships established during youth international duty continued long after we returned to our various clubs and communities.
Our paths took us into different careers and different parts of the world.
Yet those shared experiences created relationships that survived the passage of time.
I particularly remember Bright as a man whose company was enjoyable.
He could bring a smile to a difficult moment without making himself the centre of attention.
That understated sense of humour was part of what distinguished him.

The passing of a former teammate is always painful.
It means that someone who shared the dreams, discipline and excitement of our youth is no longer here to tell his own stories.
Brightโs memory deserves to be preserved not merely because he belonged to a historic football generation, but because of the human qualities he brought into it.
He was a talented and confident player.
He was approachable.
He had a delightful, understated sense of humour.
And he remained connected to the game that brought so many of us together.
The memories of our teammates are part of Nigeriaโs sporting heritage.
We owe it to future generations to preserve them with accuracy, dignity and affection.

You were a teammate, a footballer and a personality whose presence enriched our collective experience.
Your footballing confidence, friendship and quiet humour remain part of how I remember you.
