The history of Nigerian football includes extraordinary young men whose journeys began on the football fields of Lagos and eventually carried them across international borders.

Mukaila Buraimoh, affectionately known as Mikky Dele, belongs to that generation.

A member of Nigeriaโ€™s historic 1983 Flying Eagles, Mukaila developed through the competitive Lagos football environment that helped produce many of the countryโ€™s outstanding young internationals.

His journey connected grassroots development, local league football and national youth-team recognition before life eventually took him to London, England.

Mukaila was associated with the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON), whose competitions provided important opportunities for talented youngsters during the 1970s and early 1980s.

YSFON was more than a collection of football tournaments.

It created opportunities for boys from different neighbourhoods and backgrounds to compete, travel, develop friendships and gain recognition beyond their immediate communities.

That was the football environment in which Mukaila emerged.

He also participated in Lagos local league football before eventually relocating overseas.

The local competitions of that era demanded considerable determination. Schoolboys regularly encountered older and more experienced footballers, and promising youngsters had to earn recognition through performance.

For Mukaila, those formative experiences helped establish a connection with the national youth football programme.

Mukailaโ€™s name is preserved among the players associated with Nigeriaโ€™s pioneering 1983 Flying Eagles under the late Coach Christopher Udemezue.

It was a generation assembled from different football communities and competitive backgrounds.

Our historic achievement came on January 8, 1983, when Nigeria defeated Guinea 2โ€“0 in Lagos to secure the countryโ€™s first qualification for a FIFA World Cup tournament at any level.

The achievement marked a turning point in Nigerian football history.

Mukailaโ€™s inclusion in the historical squad record establishes his connection with the generation that helped open a new chapter for Nigerian football.

Mukaila eventually moved to London, England, where he established another chapter of his life.

Like several members of our football generation, his journey extended beyond the Nigerian sporting environment in which his early ambitions developed.

Yet the years spent in youth football and the relationships established during that period remain part of our collective history.

Football creates connections that can endure across countries and decades.

As we preserve the history of Nigeriaโ€™s 1983 Flying Eagles, every member deserves an account that recognizes his own experiences and contribution.

Mukaila Buraimohโ€™s connection with YSFON, Lagos football and our historic national youth-team generation represents an important part of that story.

His journey reminds us that Nigerian football history extends beyond the players who became household names.

It also belongs to those whose ambitions, experiences and friendships helped define an entire generation.
