When Nigerians remember our historic 1983 Flying Eagles, they naturally celebrate the players, our goals, the coaches and the achievement that took Nigeria to its first FIFA World Cup tournament at any level.
But behind the footballers were professionals whose work rarely attracted the attention of television cameras or sports commentators.
One of those individuals was ๐ข๐น๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฝ๐ผ ๐ข๐ฑ๐๐ป๐๐ด๐ฎ, ๐๐ก๐ฆ๐ฃ.
He was our team physiotherapist, a qualified healthcare professional whose career would extend across approximately three and a half decades of Nigerian sports.
His contributions reached far beyond our Flying Eagles generation.
He eventually served Nigerian teams at FIFA tournaments, Olympic Games and other major international competitions, working with athletes across numerous sporting disciplines.

Mr. Odunuga received his physiotherapy education at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, during the late 1970s.
He subsequently undertook specialized training in sports physiotherapy and sports science in the United Kingdom and Australia.
His professional development also took him to international seminars on sports injuries and their management in countries including the United States, China, South Korea, Japan and Uzbekistan, as well as Berlin, Germany.
That commitment to professional education reflected the increasing importance of scientific knowledge in modern sport.
Physiotherapy is not simply about attending to a player after an injury.
It involves understanding movement, physical rehabilitation, recovery and the demands that different sporting activities place on the human body.

Mr. Odunuga was a member of the medical support structure serving our historic Flying Eagles generation under Coaches Christopher Udemezue and Isiaka Yakubu.
Our preparations were demanding.
Technical training, tactical drills and physical conditioning formed part of the programme that prepared us for international competition.
While our military physical training officers concentrated on endurance and stamina, the physiotherapy function addressed another essential responsibility: the physical care and recovery needs of the players.
On January 8, 1983, Nigeria defeated Guinea 2โ0 in Lagos and secured qualification for the FIFA World Youth Championship in Mexico.
It was an unprecedented achievement for Nigerian football.
Mr. Odunuga subsequently accompanied the national youth-team programme to Mexico in June 1983.
He belonged to the group of professionals whose work supported that pioneering football generation.

His association with Nigeriaโs national football teams continued long after Mexico.
According to his professional account, his international assignments included:
โข ๐ญ๐ต๐ด๐ฏ โ FIFA World Youth Championship, Mexico.
โข ๐ญ๐ต๐ด๐ฑ โ FIFA World Youth Championship, Soviet Union.
โข ๐ญ๐ต๐ด๐ณ โ FIFA World Youth Championship, Chile.
โข ๐ญ๐ต๐ด๐ต โ FIFA World Youth Championship, Saudi Arabia.
โข ๐ญ๐ต๐ต๐ด โ FIFA World Cup, France, with Nigeriaโs senior national team.
He also reported involvement with Nigeriaโs younger age-grade teams at international tournaments in China, Canada and Japan during the 1980s and 1990s.
The breadth of these assignments reveals a professional career connected with multiple generations of Nigerian football.

Mr. Odunuga also served Nigeriaโs Olympic football teams.
His assignments included Atlanta 1996, when Nigeriaโs menโs football team won Africaโs first Olympic football gold medal, and Beijing 2008, when Nigeria earned silver.
These achievements became defining moments in Nigerian sporting history.
The players and coaches rightly received national recognition, but the work of the support personnel formed part of the broader professional environment surrounding those teams.
His international service was not limited to football.
He also worked with Nigerian athletes participating in the Commonwealth Games, All-Africa Games and international competitions involving athletics, boxing, basketball, weightlifting, volleyball, wrestling, judo and taekwondo.

One particularly remarkable aspect of Mr. Odunugaโs career is the range of footballers with whom he worked.
In his personal account, he recalled providing physiotherapy services to players including:
โข Segun Odegbami, Adokiye Amiesimaka, Emmanuel Okala, Best Ogedegbe and Muda Lawal.
โข Stephen Keshi, Henry Nwosu, Peter Rufai, Nwankwo Kanu and Daniel Amokachi.
โข Jay-Jay Okocha, Jonathan Akpoborie, Wilson Oruma and the Babayaro brothers.
โข Victor Ikpeba, John Chiedozie, Haruna Ilerika and several other Nigerian internationals.
He also recalled working with the Atuegbu brothers and many athletes from other sporting disciplines.
His career therefore connected footballers from different generations, playing positions, clubs and national-team programmes.
The significance is not simply the number of celebrated names.
It is that a specialist who worked with our 1983 Flying Eagles went on to provide professional support across decades of Nigerian sporting achievement.

Mr. Odunugaโs contribution also extended to sports medicine research.
In 2012, he co-authored a published study examining musculoskeletal injuries among Nigerian amateur boxers.
That work demonstrated his engagement with professional knowledge beyond his responsibilities at competitions.
He ultimately retired as Director and Head of Physiotherapy Services in the National Sports Commissionโs National Sports Medicine Department.
That leadership position reflected a career of sustained professional service.
His designation as a Fellow of the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapists further recognizes his standing within the profession.

In football, the contributions of medical and rehabilitation professionals are often appreciated quietly.
A footballer may remember a training session, a difficult recovery or the encouragement received while preparing to return to competition.
The stadium crowd may never know the individuals responsible for providing that support.
But their work deserves recognition.
Mr. Odunugaโs career demonstrates why the history of Nigerian football must include the people whose responsibilities extended beyond coaching and playing.
He belonged to our football family in 1983 and continued serving Nigerian sports for decades.

Oladipo Odunugaโs journey began with professional training in physiotherapy and developed into a career spanning national youth teams, senior football, Olympic competition and international sporting championships.
He served alongside generations of Nigerian athletes whose achievements brought recognition to the country.
And among the early chapters of that distinguished career was his involvement with our historic 1983 Flying Eagles.
Mr. Odunuga, your contribution deserves a place alongside the achievements of the athletes and coaches whose careers you supported.
Your professional service reminds us that successful national teams are built not only through talent and coaching, but also through knowledge, healthcare, preparation and dedication.

You were there as a professional whose responsibilities mattered.
From Mexico 1983 to international competitions across the world, your career deserves recognition and respect.
