Abbas Names Fred Agbedi Minority Leader as House Resolves Opposition Leadership Dispute
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has announced Hon. Fred Agbedi as the new Minority Leader of the House, bringing an end to weeks of uncertainty over the leadership of the opposition caucus.
Agbedi, who represents Ekeremo/Sagbama Federal Constituency of Bayelsa State, will now lead opposition lawmakers in the Green Chamber.
The Speaker also unveiled other principal officers of the minority caucus, naming Hon. Abdussamad Dasuki as Deputy Minority Leader and Hon. Manur Soro as Minority Whip.
The announcement was made during Thursday’s plenary session amid mounting pressure from members of the G-60 opposition bloc, who had demanded a resolution of the lingering leadership dispute within the minority caucus.
The lawmakers reportedly warned that continued delay in constituting the opposition leadership could disrupt legislative business and force a suspension of plenary proceedings.
With the Speaker’s announcement, the leadership question within the opposition ranks appears to have been settled, paving the way for the newly appointed principal officers to assume their responsibilities.
The development is expected to strengthen coordination among opposition lawmakers and restore stability within the minority caucus as the House continues its legislative activities.
