Drama in Senate as Akpabio, Oshiomhole Clash
A heated exchange erupted on the floor of the Senate on Wednesday between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Adams Oshiomhole, briefly disrupting plenary proceedings.
The confrontation began after Oshiomhole attempted to raise a point of order while the Senate President was calling for the confirmation of the Votes and Proceedings of the previous legislative day. His intervention was not immediately acknowledged, prompting repeated interjections of “point of order” from the senator.
Despite efforts by Senate Chief Whip Mohammed Monguno to restore order, tensions persisted as Oshiomhole continued to interrupt proceedings.
Akpabio subsequently responded by citing Senate rules governing conduct within the chamber, corridors, and official proceedings. He stressed that the Senate President is empowered to maintain order, interpret rules, and ensure proper legislative procedure.
He also reminded lawmakers that the presiding officer has the authority to rule on points of constitutional order, maintain decorum, and in certain cases, direct unruly members to leave the chamber.
The exchange underscored procedural tensions on the floor of the upper legislative chamber, though proceedings later continued after order was restored.
