Reps Minority Caucus Raises Alarm Over Insecurity, Economic Hardship, Threats to Opposition Politics
The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has expressed concern over rising insecurity, worsening economic conditions and what it described as attempts to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Addressing journalists at the National Assembly in Abuja, the Minority Leader of the House, Hon. Fred Agbedi, said Nigeria was facing serious security and economic challenges that require urgent and decisive government action.
Agbedi lamented the recent killing of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in captivity, describing the incident as another indication of the deteriorating security situation across the country.
He also expressed concern over the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, urging security agencies to intensify efforts to secure their immediate rescue and ensure the safety of citizens.
The lawmaker said the continued attacks, kidnappings and other violent crimes across parts of the country have heightened public anxiety and underscored the need for stronger security measures.
Caucus Condemns Deregistration Ruling
The Minority Caucus further criticised a recent court judgment ordering the deregistration of five opposition political parties, warning that such developments could undermine Nigeria’s democratic foundations.
According to Agbedi, the ruling poses a threat to the country’s multi-party system and raises concerns about the future of political pluralism ahead of the next electoral cycle.
He maintained that democracy thrives when citizens are presented with diverse political choices and opposition parties are allowed to operate freely within the confines of the law.
The caucus called on relevant authorities to safeguard democratic institutions, protect political freedoms and address the growing concerns of Nigerians over insecurity and economic hardship.
Agbedi stressed that tackling the nation’s security and economic challenges should remain a priority for government at all levels, noting that citizens expect practical solutions that will improve their welfare and restore confidence in democratic governance.
