Amaechi Set to Lead ADC Campaign as Atiku Eyes ‘Reformed Presidenc

Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi is expected to head the presidential campaign organization of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as the opposition candidate reportedly prepares a reform-focused model of governance ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

According to reports from party insiders, Amaechi is being considered for the position of Director-General of the ADC Presidential Campaign Organisation, a role that would place him at the center of Atiku’s nationwide campaign strategy. The move is also linked to ongoing discussions about Amaechi’s potential emergence as Atiku’s running mate.

Sources familiar with the discussions said Atiku’s vision extends beyond the election campaign and includes plans to reshape the workings of Nigeria’s presidency. The former vice president is reportedly advocating a governance structure that grants the vice president more defined responsibilities and influence, departing from the traditional arrangement in which the office’s role largely depends on the president’s discretion.

Party insiders say Atiku’s thinking is informed by his own experience as vice president between 1999 and 2007, during which relations between the presidency and vice presidency became strained in later years. Under the proposed model, the vice president would play a more active role in policy implementation and governance.

Amaechi’s anticipated appointment is seen as recognition of his political experience, including his role as Director-General of the campaign that helped deliver the historic 2015 presidential victory of former President Muhammadu Buhari. Supporters argue that his organizational skills and national political network could strengthen the ADC’s challenge against the ruling party in 2027.

Reports also indicate that former Sokoto State governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal may be considered for a senior position within the campaign structure, potentially serving as deputy director-general.
