Nsukka Monarch’s Alleged Suspension Over Obi Visit Sparks Political Controversy

Controversy has erupted in Enugu State following reports that a traditional ruler in Nsukka Local Government Area was suspended after hosting and praying for the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi.

The reported development has triggered reactions across the country, coming as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obi recently visited the Opi Kingdom in Nsukka, where he met with the traditional ruler, Igwe Willy Ezugwu, Eze Ka Eze I of Ideke Land and Eze Ogbozalla III of Opi Kingdom. Obi said the monarch received him warmly, offered prayers and gave him royal blessings.

Reacting to the reported suspension, political analyst Sam Amadi described the development as part of an electoral strategy by leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-East.

“This is election strategy. This is how APC leaders in the South-East intend to get 25 per cent for Tinubu. They have to ban and suspend everyone to get 25 per cent or win the zone. They are tired of Dave Umahi’s pleas to South-Easterners,” Amadi said.

The comments have further fuelled debate over the role of traditional institutions in Nigeria’s electoral politics and the extent to which monarchs should engage with political candidates during election seasons.

The claim of the monarch’s suspension, however, requires further official confirmation, including details of who ordered the alleged suspension, the stated reason for the action and whether it was directly connected to Obi’s visit.

The development comes amid increasing political mobilisation across the South-East as parties and presidential contenders begin strengthening their structures and courting traditional, religious and community leaders ahead of the 2027 elections.
