Asian stock markets fell on Tuesday as investors assessed rising geopolitical risks and awaited quarterly earnings from major technology companies, while oil prices edged higher amid uncertainty over global energy supplies.

The MSCI Asia ex-Japan index dropped 0.93%, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 declined 1.28%. South Korea’s KOSPI recorded a sharper fall of 3.61%, reflecting cautious investor sentiment across the region.

The declines came as markets prepared for financial results from major artificial intelligence and technology companies, including Meta Platforms, Tesla, Lam Research and Texas Instruments. Investors are looking for signs that heavy spending on AI infrastructure is translating into sustainable revenue growth and profits.

Meta is scheduled to report its results on Wednesday, while Tesla and the chipmaking companies are expected to release their figures later in the week. The reports could influence market expectations about technology-sector earnings and the outlook for AI-related investments.

According to Reuters, five major AI infrastructure companies are expected to increase their combined capital expenditure to approximately $1.2 trillion next year, based on Goldman Sachs estimates. The scale of the anticipated spending has heightened scrutiny of whether the industry can deliver returns sufficient to justify the investment.

Oil prices moved in the opposite direction, with Brent crude rising 0.21% to $109.78 per barrel and US West Texas Intermediate gaining 0.15% to $103.82.

The increase followed renewed uncertainty over energy markets after US President Donald Trump issued an executive order waiving key Russia-related sanctions and tariffs affecting Russian energy. Although the move could ease some pressure on energy supplies, uncertainty remains over the final scope and duration of the measures.

Geopolitical developments also weighed on investor confidence. Riots and unrest in parts of France prompted authorities to impose curfews in several cities, including Paris, Lille and Nice, encouraging demand for assets considered safer during periods of uncertainty.

Meanwhile, the US dollar remained relatively firm against major currencies, while gold prices declined. The dollar index slipped 0.05% to 101.92, and spot gold fell 0.51% to $4,118.71 an ounce.

Market participants are also monitoring central bank signals for indications of the future direction of interest rates. Recent comments from US Federal Reserve officials have suggested that policymakers are not in a hurry to raise rates again, although uncertainty surrounding inflation, economic growth and energy prices remains.

The contrasting movements in equities and oil highlight the competing forces shaping global markets. While investors remain concerned about geopolitical instability and energy costs, the upcoming technology earnings season could provide a clearer picture of corporate resilience and the sustainability of the AI investment boom.

Attention will now turn to the earnings announcements and further developments in energy and geopolitical policy, which could determine the direction of markets in the coming days.
