Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been taken to hospital after collapsing while watching a training session involving the club’s reserve team on Friday, October 23, 2026.

The German champions confirmed that the 40-year-old Belgian required medical attention after collapsing during the session. The club said he was undergoing thorough medical examinations and would remain under medical care.

Kompany had been observing the second team’s training when the incident occurred. Bayern announced that his coaching staff would take charge of training and match-related activities until further notice.

The incident comes after the former Manchester City defender revealed that he had been suffering from a viral infection in recent days. His illness had forced him to miss some training sessions and a pre-match press conference ahead of Bayern’s UEFA Champions League encounter with Arsenal.

Despite feeling unwell, Kompany was present in the dugout for Wednesday’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal at the Allianz Arena. After the match, he acknowledged that he had not given himself enough time to recover from the illness.

Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl said the coach’s health remained the club’s priority and assured supporters that he would receive the necessary medical care and time to recover.

“Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and he will be given as much time as he needs,” Eberl said in a statement released by the club.

The club also expressed its support for Kompany and wished him a speedy recovery. Although Sky Sports, citing its reporting in Germany, said his condition was stable, Bayern’s official statement did not provide a detailed diagnosis or confirm when he might leave hospital.

Kompany took charge of Bayern in 2024 after managing Burnley and Anderlecht. Under his leadership, the Munich side have established themselves among the leading teams in the Bundesliga.

Bayern are scheduled to face Freiburg in their next Bundesliga fixture on Sunday. It remains unclear whether Kompany will be available for the match, with his coaching staff expected to oversee preparations while he remains under medical supervision.
