Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the closure of the occupied West Bank following a shooting attack near Hebron that killed two Israeli soldiers and wounded others, prompting renewed security operations across the Palestinian territory.

The Israeli military said the attack occurred on Friday, October 23, 2026, near a military position in the Hebron area. Two Palestinian gunmen were killed by Israeli forces following an exchange of fire that reportedly lasted about 20 minutes.

The Israeli military identified the two soldiers killed as Staff Sergeant Ron Yonatan Roytman and Sergeant Yuval Shai Svilem. Three other soldiers were reported to have sustained light injuries, according to the military. Earlier reports from emergency responders said five people had been wounded, including some initially described as being in critical condition.

Following the incident, Netanyahu ordered security forces to immediately seal off Hebron and prepare for a wider lockdown across the occupied West Bank. Israeli forces also established roadblocks and closed roads in surrounding Palestinian communities.

Netanyahu said the security forces would intensify operations against Hamas and carry out extensive arrests. Israeli officials alleged that the gunmen had been carrying substantial quantities of weapons and ammunition, suggesting they may have been preparing a larger attack.

Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack, according to reports from Israeli and international media. The group described the incident as a response to Israeli actions against Palestinians, while Israeli authorities condemned the shooting and vowed to pursue those responsible.

The closure comes amid heightened tensions in the West Bank, where Israeli military operations, settler violence and restrictions on Palestinian movement have contributed to growing insecurity. The latest measures are expected to affect travel between Palestinian towns and villages, particularly where checkpoints and access roads are closed.

The timing is also politically significant, with Israel scheduled to hold national elections on October 27. Security has emerged as a major issue in the campaign, with Netanyahu and his political opponents facing competing demands over how to address attacks against Israelis and escalating violence in the occupied territory.

The full extent and duration of the restrictions were not immediately clear. Israeli authorities said security operations would continue as investigations into the shooting proceeded.
