A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed May 28, 2026, to hear a suit seeking to compel the Nigeria Police Force to reopen the investigation into the death of late Nigerian singer Mohbad.

The case, filed by the Break the Silence Foundation, is requesting a court order directing police authorities to carry out a fresh, thorough, and impartial probe into the circumstances surrounding the artist’s death in September 2023.

Justice James Omotosho adjourned proceedings to allow for the hearing after confirming that all respondents; including the Inspector-General of Police, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police had been duly served.

The application seeks an order of mandamus compelling law enforcement to fulfil its statutory duties by reopening the case, amid ongoing public concerns about the initial investigation.

Mohbad’s death sparked widespread outrage across Nigeria and beyond, with protests and the viral #JusticeForMohbad campaign demanding accountability and transparency from authorities.

Although the court has not yet ordered a full reopening of the investigation, the upcoming hearing is expected to determine whether the police will be legally mandated to revisit the case.
The development marks a significant step in the prolonged legal and public battle for clarity over the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death, nearly three years after the incident.
