The death of a young medical doctor in Delta State has ignited a fierce controversy, as conflicting accounts emerge over whether he died from injuries sustained during an assault by a patient’s relatives or from complications linked to allegations of medical negligence. Dr Ogbomade Samson Romani, a house officer at Central Hospital Warri and a graduate of Niger Delta University, was confirmed dead in the early hours of April 17, 2026, after collapsing earlier in the week and being admitted to the Intensive Care Unit .

The controversy centres on the circumstances leading to the February 2026 attack that reportedly left Dr Romani with severe injuries. According to one account cited in multiple reports, trouble began when the condition of a patient under Dr Romani’s care worsened while on admission, leading the patient’s family to suspect negligence or inadequate care . “In the heat of the moment, they allegedly accused the doctor of not responding quickly enough during a critical period and questioned some of the treatment decisions made,” a report detailed. As emotions escalated, the situation spiralled out of control, with some unconfirmed accounts claiming the patient may have died, further fuelling the anger of the relatives .

The confrontation reportedly occurred after Dr Romani had finished his shift and was heading home. He was allegedly confronted by hoodlums said to have been arranged by a patient’s relative, with the attack taking place at or near the hospital gate . Colleagues said Dr Romani was beaten for nearly 20 minutes, sustaining serious injuries to his face and abdomen . Witnesses reportedly claimed that security personnel were slow to intervene during the assault .

Dr Romani survived the immediate aftermath but reportedly struggled with health complications from the injuries in the months that followed . Earlier this week, according to a colleague who spoke on condition of anonymity, Dr Romani attended a meeting with other medical staff but excused himself after suddenly feeling unwell . While making his way to the doctors’ quarters to rest, he collapsed and was rushed to the ICU, where doctors made efforts to stabilise him. Despite their attempts, he later passed away .

The controversy has deepened as no arrests have been publicly confirmed in connection with the February assault, despite the severity of the incident . Medical professionals and stakeholders have called on the Delta State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigerian Medical Association to investigate the circumstances surrounding the assault and the doctor’s death .

The case has reignited debate within Nigeria’s medical community about violence against healthcare workers, hospital security, and accountability for attacks on doctors . Fellow doctors described Dr Romani as hardworking, humble, and deeply committed to his profession . Reports indicate he was laid to rest shortly after his passing .

Dr Romani’s death marks the second loss of a doctor linked to the Niger Delta University community within the same week, raising fresh concerns about the safety and welfare of healthcare workers, particularly in public hospitals . The development has renewed concerns over workplace violence against healthcare personnel across the country, with many questioning why those responsible for the February assault have not been apprehended . As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from the hospital management or police confirming the circumstances surrounding the case .
