Edun, Dangiwa Resign Voluntarily, Not Sacked – Presidency Clarifies Cabinet Changes
The Presidency on Tuesday clarified that the immediate past Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and the former Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, voluntarily resigned from their positions in the Federal Executive Council, dismissing speculations that they were removed from office.
The clarification was issued in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, Mr Edun formally tendered his resignation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the announcement of his replacement, citing health reasons for his decision to step down.
Edun, who turned 70 on Monday and has recently faced health challenges, submitted his resignation on his birthday. In his farewell letter, he expressed appreciation to the President for the opportunity to serve.
“It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve your administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he wrote.
“Under your leadership, Nigeria has emerged stronger, more resilient and more internationally respected.
“I wish you and the administration every success in the future.”
Before his exit was officially announced, Edun paid a valedictory visit to President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, where the two held a private hour-long discussion.
The statement also confirmed that Ahmed Musa Dangiwa resigned from his position as Minister of Housing and Urban Development, thanking the President for the opportunity to serve in the cabinet. Dangiwa previously served as Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank between 2015 and 2022, and later as Secretary to the Katsina State Government before his appointment in August 2023.
President Tinubu expressed appreciation to both outgoing ministers for their contributions to the administration’s economic and housing reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda, and wished them well in their future endeavours.
Meanwhile, the President has directed the new Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, to consolidate ongoing fiscal reforms and advance the administration’s economic agenda with renewed discipline and focus.
The President is also expected to forward the nomination of Muttaqha Rabe Darma, from Katsina State, as the new Minister of Housing and Urban Development to the Senate for confirmation.
