Hull City Shock Manchester United 2-0 in Premier League Opener
Manchester United suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to newly promoted Hull City on Saturday, making a disastrous start to their 2026/27 Premier League campaign.
Playing at the MKM Stadium, Michael Carrick’s side struggled to turn their dominance of possession into clear-cut chances as Hull produced a disciplined and energetic performance to claim a famous victory.
Hull took the lead in the 17th minute when Semi Ajayi reacted quickest to score from a rebound after goalkeeper Senne Lammens had initially kept out Oli McBurnie’s effort from a corner.
The hosts doubled their advantage before half-time through Nobel Mendy, leaving United with a two-goal deficit at the break.
Despite controlling around 72% of possession, United struggled to seriously threaten Hull’s goal. Their attacking problems continued after the interval, even after Carrick introduced Marcus Rashford in an attempt to change the game.
Hull defended resolutely to protect their lead and secure a memorable three points on their return to the Premier League after a nine-year absence.
The victory was particularly significant for the Tigers, marking their first-ever Premier League victory over Manchester United and their first league win against the Red Devils in 52 years.
For United, the defeat will raise early questions about Carrick’s team after the optimism surrounding the club following an impressive finish to last season.
Carrick had guided United to a third-place finish after taking charge in January, helping revive the team’s fortunes and generate renewed belief among supporters. However, Hull’s aggressive approach exposed weaknesses in United’s defending and attacking intensity.
The defeat also means United have now lost their opening Premier League fixture in four of the last seven seasons.
Carrick urged his players to remain calm and learn from the setback, insisting that one match should not define the campaign. But with expectations high around Old Trafford, the defeat provides an early warning that United still have considerable work to do.
Hull, meanwhile, could hardly have asked for a better return to the top flight, with their players and supporters celebrating one of the biggest victories in the club’s recent history.
