Gunmen suspected to be armed bandits have killed a teacher abducted alongside students during a school raid in Oyo State, south-west Nigeria, in a shocking escalation of violence linked to recent school kidnappings in the region.

According to security and community sources, the victims were taken during an armed attack on schools in the Oriire area of Oyo State, where gunmen stormed school premises and abducted both pupils and staff. While authorities initially launched a rescue operation and detained some suspects, reports now indicate that one of the abducted teachers was later killed by the kidnappers.

Local accounts suggest the teacher was beheaded while in captivity, though officials have yet to release full forensic confirmation or details surrounding the circumstances of the killing. The incident has intensified fear among residents, especially parents whose children remain vulnerable to similar attacks.

Police in Oyo State confirmed earlier that several suspects had been arrested in connection with the abduction, while security operatives continue search-and-rescue operations for other victims believed to still be in captivity.

The attack is part of a disturbing wave of school kidnappings across Nigeria, with armed groups increasingly targeting educational institutions for ransom and leverage. Recent incidents across the country have seen dozens, and in some cases hundreds of students abducted in coordinated raids.

Human rights groups have condemned the worsening insecurity, warning that schools in both northern and southern Nigeria are now at risk, despite earlier assumptions that such attacks were largely confined to the north.

Authorities have pledged to intensify security operations and ensure the safe return of all remaining abductees.
