Middle East on Edge: Iran Swears Revenge After Khamenei’s Death, Israel Strikes Back
Iran has vowed revenge after its Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was confirmed killed in a joint US‑Israeli military offensive, escalating a conflict that has sharply widened across the Middle East.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian condemned the killing of Khamenei, whom Tehran described as both the country’s spiritual head and a symbol of resistance against Western influence. He called the strike a “declaration of war against Muslims” and insisted Iran would exact retribution against those responsible.
The death of the 86‑year‑old Supreme Leader, who ruled Iran since 1989, marks one of the most consequential blows to the Islamic Republic’s leadership since its 1979 founding. Iran has begun a period of national mourning and established an interim leadership council to guide the country in the short term.
In response, Iran’s military has launched missile and drone strikes against Israeli and US assets across the region, while Israel’s air force says it has struck Tehran again, targeting ballistic missile sites and air defense systems.
The conflict has broadened beyond Iran and Israel, with exchanges of fire reported across Gulf states and reactions rippling through regional capitals. International concerns are mounting that the confrontation could destabilize global security and disrupt energy markets.
