The Nigeria Customs Service has announced that it exceeded its 2025 revenue target by generating ₦7.277 trillion, surpassing the projected ₦6.584 trillion, despite the impact of government-approved duty waivers and tax concessions introduced to support economic growth.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, disclosed this on Monday while presenting the Service’s 2025 budget performance and 2026 budget proposal before the Committees on Customs and Excise of the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Adeniyi attributed the strong revenue performance to ongoing reforms aimed at improving revenue collection, transparency and operational efficiency across the Service.

He noted that the feat was achieved despite fiscal policy measures, including import duty waivers and tax incentives, which reduced the amount of revenue collectible by the agency.

For the 2026 fiscal year, the Customs boss disclosed that the Service has been given a revenue target of ₦11.074 trillion, reflecting the Federal Government’s confidence in its capacity to boost non-oil revenue.

According to him, Customs plans to achieve the target through greater deployment of digital technology, enhanced post-clearance audits, intelligence-driven anti-smuggling operations and improved trade facilitation initiatives.

He also reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to balancing revenue generation with legitimate trade, while supporting national economic development through efficient customs administration.

After reviewing the presentation, the National Assembly committees approved the Nigeria Customs Service’s proposed 2026 budget, expressing satisfaction with its 2025 performance and strategic plans for the coming year.

The approval clears the way for the Service to intensify reforms aimed at strengthening revenue mobilisation and improving customs operations nationwide.
