The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Agricultural Innovation Mechanism for Scale (AIM for Scale) to improve access to accurate weather and climate information for farmers across Nigeria.

The partnership is designed to deploy artificial intelligence (AI)-powered weather forecasting and strengthen digital advisory platforms that convert climate data into clear, practical guidance for farmers. The move is expected to support better decision-making in farming activities and reduce exposure to climate-related risks.

Through the collaboration, both organisations will deliver tailored weather insights to farmers, helping them optimise planting schedules, manage agricultural inputs efficiently, and mitigate the impact of extreme weather conditions. The initiative ultimately aims to improve farm productivity and strengthen livelihoods.

AIM for Scale, backed by the UAE Presidential Court’s International Affairs Office and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will support NiMet in expanding the reach of climate advisory services to more farming communities.

NiMet currently plays a critical role in Nigeria’s climate information system, providing seasonal forecasts, early warning alerts, and digital climate services. The new agreement will deepen these efforts by integrating AI into forecasting processes, enhancing institutional capacity, and improving how weather information is communicated to end users.

Nigeria is also among the first countries selected for the AI Weather Forecasting Training Programme led by AIM for Scale in collaboration with the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence and the University of Chicago, launched in Abu Dhabi in September 2025. The programme is aimed at equipping countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America with the tools to independently generate and distribute localized weather forecasts.

Speaking at the MoU signing in Abuja, NiMet Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Charles Anosike, said the partnership would enhance the delivery of timely and actionable climate information to farmers, enabling them to better plan their planting and harvesting seasons while reducing risks associated with unpredictable weather.

He stressed that reliable weather and climate information remains vital for national development, food security, and disaster risk management.

Also speaking, AIM for Scale Director, Imara Salas, noted that AI-powered forecasting and digital advisory systems have the potential to significantly improve crop yields, promote efficient resource use, and build resilience among smallholder farmers.

The partnership marks a significant step toward modernising Nigeria’s weather forecasting systems and expanding access to climate-smart agricultural solutions through technology.
