At least nine people have been killed after a 14-year-old student opened fire at a middle school in Kahramanmaras, marking Turkey’s second school shooting in two days.

According to authorities, the victims include eight students and one teacher, while 13 others sustained injuries, with several reported to be in critical condition.

Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci said the attack was a personal act and not linked to terrorism.

“This was solely a personal attack carried out by one of our students,” he stated.

Earlier, Governor Mukerrem Unluer disclosed that the attacker, an eighth-grade student, entered the school armed with multiple weapons and ammunition reportedly belonging to his former police officer father.

The gunman opened fire indiscriminately in two classrooms before taking his own life during the chaos, officials said.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect’s father has been detained as part of ongoing investigations.

The incident comes just a day after another shooting in Sanliurfa, where a former student injured at least 16 people before also killing himself.

School shootings are rare in Turkey, where gun ownership is regulated, though firearms remain accessible, particularly among security personnel.

Emergency responders and security forces were seen at the scene as ambulances evacuated victims, while distressed parents and residents gathered outside the school premises.

The back-to-back attacks have raised fresh concerns about school safety and access to firearms, with authorities pledging to review security measures in educational institutions.
