Panic in Lagos as Three-Storey Building Collapses, Several Feared Trapped
Residents of the Alakija area of Lagos State were thrown into panic on Thursday after a three-storey building suddenly collapsed, leaving an unspecified number of people feared trapped beneath the rubble.
The building reportedly caved in at about 11:40 a.m., triggering confusion and attracting scores of residents, traders and passersby to the scene as fears mounted over the fate of those inside the structure at the time of the incident.
Witnesses said frantic efforts were underway to ascertain the number of occupants trapped under the debris, although officials had yet to confirm casualties or injuries as of press time.
The collapse occurred in the densely populated Alakija axis, raising concerns about the safety of neighbouring buildings and the possibility of further structural failures.
Residents expressed frustration over the delayed arrival of emergency responders, with many calling for urgent intervention to rescue those believed to be trapped in the wreckage.
Videos and photographs from the scene showed a crowd gathering around the collapsed structure as people anxiously awaited rescue teams.
The cause of the collapse was not immediately known. However, authorities are expected to commence investigations to determine whether structural defects, poor construction standards, building violations, or other factors contributed to the incident.
Building collapses remain a recurring challenge in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria, often linked to substandard construction materials, inadequate regulatory oversight, and non-compliance with approved building plans.
Emergency management agencies are expected to provide further updates as rescue operations intensify and assessments of the damage continue.
Meanwhile, concerned residents have called on relevant authorities to strengthen monitoring and enforcement of building regulations to prevent future tragedies.
