Russia Under Heavy Drone Attack: Kremlin Reports One of War’s Biggest Ukrainian Operations

Russia says it has repelled one of the largest Ukrainian drone attacks since the start of the full-scale war, claiming that air defense systems intercepted 660 drones overnight across multiple regions of the country, including the Moscow area and the Russian-annexed Crimean Peninsula. The attack marks a significant escalation in Ukraine’s expanding long-range drone campaign aimed at bringing the war deeper into Russian territory.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the drones were intercepted over 12 Russian regions, as well as over Crimea, the Black Sea, and the Sea of Azov. Russian officials described the operation as one of the largest coordinated aerial attacks conducted by Ukraine during the conflict. The reported number surpassed a previous major attack in May, when Russia said it had intercepted 556 drones.

Russian authorities stated that air defense systems were activated throughout the night, with dozens of drones reportedly heading toward strategic areas. Officials claimed that 47 drones were intercepted near Moscow alone. While authorities reported no major casualties in the capital region, emergency services were deployed to investigate damage caused by falling debris and intercepted aircraft.

Although Ukrainian authorities did not immediately provide detailed comments on the latest operation, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently indicated that Ukraine intends to maintain pressure on Russia through long-range strikes while seeking stronger negotiating positions. Zelenskyy has also claimed that successful drone operations are forcing Russia to redeploy valuable air defense assets away from the front lines and toward major cities and strategic facilities.

The latest assault appears to fit into a broader Ukrainian strategy aimed at disrupting Russia’s military logistics and demonstrating that the conflict can affect regions far from the battlefield. Analysts note that Ukrainian drone technology has advanced significantly since the war began, allowing attacks to reach targets hundreds or even thousands of kilometers from Ukrainian-controlled territory.

Meanwhile, reports from Russian-controlled areas near Crimea suggest that recent Ukrainian strikes have placed increasing pressure on energy infrastructure. Russian-installed authorities in occupied territories have reported power shortages, fuel supply disruptions, and restrictions on electricity consumption in some areas. Officials in Sevastopol, Crimea’s largest city, have introduced temporary measures to stabilize the power grid amid ongoing concerns about attacks on critical infrastructure.

The escalation comes amid continued Russian attacks across Ukraine. Ukrainian officials reported fresh Russian drone and missile strikes on several regions, including Kharkiv, Kyiv, Odesa, and Sumy. Ukrainian authorities said civilian casualties were recorded during those attacks, underscoring the continuing intensity of the conflict on both sides.

Military observers say the growing scale of drone warfare is reshaping the conflict. What began as a largely conventional war has evolved into a technologically driven battle involving thousands of drones, sophisticated air-defense systems, and increasingly long-range precision strikes. Both Moscow and Kyiv have invested heavily in drone production, turning unmanned aircraft into one of the most important tools of the war.

As diplomatic efforts remain stalled and both sides continue to pursue military gains, the latest drone offensive highlights how the war is expanding beyond the front lines.
