Global financial information and credit ratings firm S&P Global has agreed to acquire a majority stake in Agusto & Co., one of Africa’s leading credit rating agencies, in a move aimed at expanding its footprint in the continent’s domestic credit ratings market.

The two companies announced the agreement in a joint statement on Tuesday, saying the transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals.

Under the deal, S&P Global will partner with Agusto & Co., which has operations in Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda, and Ghana, strengthening its presence in Africa’s growing financial markets.

While the value of the transaction was not disclosed, both organisations said the partnership is expected to accelerate the development of Africa’s credit markets by combining S&P Global’s global expertise with Agusto & Co.’s deep regional experience.

The companies said the collaboration would enhance the availability of reliable credit assessments, improve market transparency, and support greater investor confidence across the continent.

The acquisition reflects increasing global interest in Africa’s financial sector as efforts continue to deepen domestic capital markets and expand access to credit for businesses and governments.

If completed, the transaction will mark a significant milestone in S&P Global’s expansion strategy in Africa, while positioning Agusto & Co. to leverage international resources and expertise to strengthen its ratings and research capabilities.
