President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday received the newly inaugurated President of the Benin, Romuald Wadagni, during an introductory visit to Lagos.

President Wadagni arrived at the Nigerian leader’s residence, where he was welcomed by Babajide Sanwo-Olu before proceeding to a closed-door meeting with President Tinubu.

The discussions, which lasted about 30 minutes, took place barely a week after Wadagni assumed office as Benin’s president following his victory in the country’s April 12 presidential election.

Although details of the talks were not immediately disclosed, the visit is seen as part of efforts to strengthen diplomatic relations and cooperation between the two neighbouring West African countries.

Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, had represented President Tinubu at Wadagni’s inauguration ceremony in Cotonou, where he reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to deepening bilateral ties and advancing regional integration.

The meeting underscores the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and Benin, with both countries maintaining close cooperation in trade, security, and regional development under the framework of the Economic Community of West African States.
