Two men were killed and four other people were injured after gunfire erupted near Toronto’s annual Salsa on St. Clair street festival on Saturday evening, sending thousands of festival-goers fleeing in panic and prompting a major police investigation. Authorities say the violence stemmed from an exchange of gunfire between two individuals rather than an indiscriminate active-shooter attack.

The shooting occurred shortly after 8:10 p.m. near the intersection of St. Clair Avenue West and Arlington Avenue, where the popular Latin American cultural festival was attracting thousands of visitors. Toronto Police initially issued an active-shooter alert, urging residents and attendees to avoid the area, but later clarified that investigators believe two gunmen targeted one another, placing numerous bystanders in danger.

Toronto Police Deputy Chief Frank Barredo said two men were pronounced dead at the scene, while four other victims suffered gunshot wounds and were transported to hospital. Authorities have not released the identities of the victims or provided details on their medical conditions. Investigators recovered two firearms from the scene and established multiple crime scenes as forensic teams gathered evidence.

Witnesses described scenes of chaos as the sound of gunfire sent crowds running for cover. Families, performers and vendors scrambled to safety, with some taking shelter behind parked vehicles and inside nearby businesses. Emergency responders quickly secured the area and treated the wounded before transporting them to hospital.

As of Sunday morning, police had not announced any arrests and said investigators were working to identify the shooters and determine what led to the exchange of gunfire. Officers appealed to members of the public to submit cellphone videos, photographs and any other information that could assist the investigation.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow condemned the violence, describing the shooting as a “reckless and unacceptable act” that shattered what should have been a celebration of community and culture. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford also expressed condolences to the victims’ families and pledged support for law enforcement as the investigation continues.

The Salsa on St. Clair festival is one of Canada’s largest celebrations of Latin American culture, featuring live music, dance performances and food vendors. The annual event typically attracts tens of thousands of visitors over its run and has long been regarded as one of Toronto’s signature summer festivals. Saturday’s shooting has renewed concerns about gun violence in Canada’s largest city, even as officials emphasize that Toronto remains one of North America’s safest major urban centres.

Police said a significant security presence will remain in the area while homicide detectives continue interviewing witnesses, reviewing surveillance footage and examining forensic evidence. Authorities urged anyone with information about the shooting to come forward as efforts continue to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
