Zelensky’s Removal of Popular Defence Minister Sparks Rare Wartime Protests in Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is facing one of the biggest domestic political challenges of his presidency after his decision to dismiss Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov triggered rare wartime protests across the country, with demonstrators accusing the government of removing one of Ukraine’s most effective reformers during a critical phase of the war with Russia.

Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the presidential administration building in Kyiv, while additional demonstrations were reported in cities including Lviv. Many carried placards demanding Fedorov’s reinstatement and criticizing the government’s decision, making it one of the largest public protests in Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022.

Fedorov, 35, had earned widespread praise for transforming Ukraine’s defence sector through technology and innovation. During his tenure, he accelerated drone production, expanded electronic warfare capabilities, modernized military procurement and introduced digital reforms that many military analysts credit with improving Ukraine’s battlefield effectiveness.

The controversy appears to stem from an increasingly public dispute between Fedorov and Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief, General Oleksandr Syrskyi. Speaking after his dismissal, Fedorov said many of his proposed reforms encountered resistance from senior military leadership and argued that Ukraine’s armed forces needed faster modernization to meet evolving battlefield challenges.

President Zelenskyy defended his decision, saying relations between the Defence Ministry and the military’s top command had broken down to the point where effective cooperation was no longer possible. He told reporters he had to choose between competing leadership approaches and insisted that maintaining unity within Ukraine’s wartime leadership was essential.

The political fallout has extended beyond street protests. A senior Ukrainian Air Force commander resigned in protest over Fedorov’s removal, while several military personnel, veterans and civil society groups publicly questioned the timing of the reshuffle as Ukraine continues fighting Russian forces. Critics argue that replacing a widely respected defence minister during an active conflict risks disrupting ongoing military reforms.

The dismissal formed part of a broader government reshuffle that also saw changes in Ukraine’s cabinet, including the appointment of Sergii Koretskyi as the country’s new prime minister. Zelenskyy said the changes were intended to strengthen government performance and improve coordination across state institutions during wartime.

Despite the growing criticism, Zelenskyy has urged Ukrainians to remain united against Russia, emphasizing that internal political disagreements should not weaken the country’s defence effort. Government officials maintain that Ukraine’s military strategy and international partnerships remain unchanged despite the cabinet changes.

Political analysts say the episode represents one of the most serious domestic tests of Zelenskyy’s leadership since the beginning of Russia’s invasion. While the president continues to enjoy broad international support, the public backlash highlights increasing concern among many Ukrainians over military leadership, defence reforms and decision-making at a crucial stage of the war.

As parliament formally approves the government’s new leadership team, attention is expected to remain focused on whether the protests subside or evolve into a broader debate over Ukraine’s wartime governance and military strategy.
