Pope Leo XIV has condemned the recent violent attacks in Nigeria, expressing deep sorrow over what he described as a “heavy loss of life” and calling on authorities to intensify efforts to protect citizens.

In a statement shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, the pontiff said he received news of the attacks with “sorrow and concern,” noting that several communities were affected by the violence.

He expressed solidarity with victims of terrorism and violence and urged relevant authorities to remain resolute in ensuring the safety and security of all Nigerians.

The Pope’s remarks come amid worsening insecurity in parts of the country, particularly in Kwara State, where gunmen recently attacked Woro and Nuku villages.

Police authorities and Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, confirmed that at least 75 people were killed in the attacks. However, residents and community leaders claim the death toll could exceed 200.

Homes and properties were reportedly razed during the attacks, while survivors recounted widespread destruction and displacement across the affected communities.

In response to the escalating violence, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the deployment of additional troops to Kwara State and declared a nationwide security emergency.

The situation has continued to draw both local and international concern as calls grow for stronger measures to address Nigeria’s persistent security challenges.
