The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on lawmakers to strengthen electoral reforms by fully embracing technology in the management and transmission of election results ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a media release dated February 9, 2026, and signed by its National President, Alhassan Yahya, the NUJ said recent legislative debates around election result handling have raised concerns about transparency and public trust in the electoral process.

The union warned that any ambiguity in the management of election outcomes could undermine confidence in democracy and heighten political tension across the country.

According to the NUJ, Nigerians have consistently demanded reforms that guarantee openness, credibility, and verifiability in elections. It noted that many modern democracies now rely on digital tools to protect the integrity of the ballot and ensure that results accurately reflect the will of voters.

The journalists’ body argued that technology-driven systems for the prompt transmission of polling unit results to collation platforms would significantly reduce suspicion, curb post-election disputes, and enhance institutional credibility.

“As lawmakers fine-tune legislative provisions ahead of the 2027 elections, priority should be given to clear and enforceable guidelines on the real-time transfer of election outcomes,” the NUJ said.

The union stressed that strengthening the framework for election result management would contribute to political stability and deepen citizens’ faith in democratic governance.

It urged all stakeholders to act in the national interest and ensure that Nigeria’s electoral architecture promotes transparency, accountability, and public trust.
