The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria has declared support for frontline activist Aisha Yesufu, media personality Dr. Chioma Constance Ikokwu, and other credible civic actors seeking elective offices in the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA said Nigeria had reached a critical democratic moment where competence, integrity, patriotism, and selfless service must become the basis for political leadership.

The group described Yesufu’s decision to transition from civic activism into partisan politics as a “bold and progressive democratic development,” arguing that advocacy must evolve into direct participation in governance.

According to HURIWA, Yesufu has consistently remained one of Nigeria’s most vocal critics of injustice, corruption, abuse of power, and poor governance, adding that individuals who have sacrificed personal comfort to defend citizens deserve opportunities to shape national policy.

The organisation also expressed support for Dr. Chioma Constance Ikokwu, who has declared interest in contesting for the House of Representatives seat representing Idemili North and South Federal Constituency.

HURIWA commended Ikokwu’s decision to enter politics, describing it as part of a growing movement of professionals and reform-minded citizens stepping into governance to contribute to national development.

The association praised her journalism career, noting her work with media organisations including THISDAY Newspapers and Arise News, where she reportedly championed issues related to human rights, women empowerment, youth inclusion, peace building, and national unity.

HURIWA urged political parties across the country to avoid recycling discredited politicians and instead create opportunities for credible Nigerians with strong intellectual capacity, integrity, and commitment to public service.

The advocacy group maintained that Nigeria’s democracy would only progress meaningfully when principled citizens and courageous reform advocates are encouraged to contest and occupy public offices.

It further reaffirmed solidarity with credible aspirants ahead of the 2027 elections, expressing optimism that Nigerians are increasingly willing to support leaders based on merit, accountability, and service rather than political rhetoric.
