Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has urged governments, families, schools, faith-based organisations and civil society groups to intensify efforts to prevent drug abuse, stressing that early intervention remains the most effective way to break the cycle of addiction and organised crime.

In a message to commemorate the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Senator Tinubu highlighted the significance of this year’s theme, “The evidence is clear: invest in prevention. Break the cycle. #StopOrganizedCrime.”

She said the theme serves as a reminder that investing in prevention through education, public awareness, family support and community engagement is essential to tackling substance abuse and dismantling criminal networks involved in illicit drug trafficking.

“The evidence is clear: invest in prevention. Break the cycle. #StopOrganizedCrime reminds us that prevention through education, awareness, family support and community engagement remains one of the most effective tools in addressing substance abuse and criminal networks,” she said.

The First Lady called on all stakeholders to strengthen collaboration in creating environments that protect children and young people from the dangers of drug abuse.

“I call on governments, families, schools, faith-based organisations and civil society to strengthen their collective commitment to creating safe, inclusive and supportive environments where every child and young person can thrive, realise their full potential and contribute meaningfully to society through sustained advocacy, care and support systems,” she stated.

Senator Tinubu said collective action is critical to safeguarding the future of Nigeria’s youth and building healthier, safer communities.

She wished Nigerians and the international community a successful commemoration of the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, while reiterating the need for sustained commitment to prevention and the fight against illicit drugs.
