Nigeria Issues Urgent Advisory as Middle East Tensions Escalates

The Federal Government has advised Nigerians residing in Iran and other Gulf states to limit movement and exercise heightened vigilance following renewed military hostilities in the Middle East.

In an emergency travel advisory issued on Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja warned that the security situation in the region remains volatile amid reports of coordinated military strikes by Israel and the United States on targets within Iran.

The ministry noted that retaliatory strikes reportedly carried out by Iran against targets in neighbouring Gulf countries have further escalated tensions, raising fears of broader regional instability.

Avoid Strategic Flashpoints

In a statement signed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, Nigerians in affected areas were urged to stay away from military bases, government facilities and other sensitive locations described as “potential flashpoints.”

The advisory outlined key safety measures for citizens:

Restrict Movement: Suspend all non-essential travel until the security situation stabilises.

Stay Informed: Rely strictly on official information channels to avoid misinformation.

Compliance: Adhere fully to directives issued by local authorities and security agencies.

Vigilance: Avoid large gatherings, protests and public demonstrations.

Consular Contact: Nigerian embassies in Tehran and across major Gulf capitals have been placed on high alert to provide assistance where necessary.

Call for De-escalation

The Federal Government expressed deep concern over the heightened tensions and warned of the risk of further escalation.

Nigeria, which maintains diplomatic and economic relations across the Middle East, joined global calls for restraint and dialogue.

“The Government of Nigeria calls on all parties to de-escalate the crisis by returning to the negotiation table in the interest of global peace and coexistence,” the statement said.

The ministry added that it will continue to monitor developments closely, reiterating that the safety and welfare of Nigerian citizens abroad remain a top priority.
