Diplomatic Tension Looms as 13 Nigerians Deported from Mozambique Despite Valid Documents
Thirteen Nigerians earlier arrested in Mozambique have been deported under controversial circumstances, despite reportedly possessing valid travel and residency documents.

The deportees, part of a larger group of 42 Nigerians initially detained, were returned to Nigeria without formal charges. According to accounts from the returnees, only one individual had an expired visa, while others maintained that their documentation was complete and up to date.

They were received at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport by officials of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, representing the Commission’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Abike Dabiri-Erewa.
Speaking on behalf of the Commission, Mr. Dipo Odebowale expressed concern over the treatment meted out to the Nigerians, describing the situation as unfair. He indicated optimism that the issue would be taken up diplomatically between Nigeria and Mozambique through their respective foreign affairs ministries.

The deportees, who arrived aboard a South African Airways flight, alleged that they were arrested at their business premises in Maputo and detained without committing any offence. They insisted they held valid permits allowing them to reside and operate in the country.
They further revealed that 29 Nigerians remain in detention in Maputo and called for urgent intervention by Nigerian authorities to secure their release.

The group, comprising adult males, appealed for support in seeking justice and redress for what they described as unjust treatment.
While sympathising with the deportees, Dabiri-Erewa urged Nigerians living abroad to respect the laws of their host countries. She, however, stressed that no Nigerian should be punished without just cause.
The development has raised fresh concerns over the treatment of Nigerians in parts of Africa and could trigger diplomatic engagement between both nations.
