The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has vowed to proceed with its National Convention scheduled for Tuesday, April 14, 2026, in Abuja, despite what it describes as mounting pressure aimed at derailing the event.

The party said it had fulfilled all requirements to host the convention at the Rainbow Event Centre, including making full payment and signing a binding agreement. However, the venue’s management allegedly informed the party of threats from the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), warning that hosting the event could lead to the revocation of its operating licence.

The ADC linked the alleged pressure to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Reacting, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, condemned the development, describing it as an abuse of power and an attempt to suppress opposition voices.

He stated that the party would not be intimidated, insisting that its agreement with the venue remains valid and enforceable under the law. Abdullahi added that any attempt to disrupt the convention would amount to an attack on democratic principles.

The ADC also alleged a pattern of obstruction, claiming earlier efforts to secure public venues in Abuja such as the National Stadium and Eagle Square were unsuccessful under similar circumstances.

Reaffirming its position, the party said the convention would go ahead as planned, while calling on Nigerians, civil society groups, and the international community to take note of the situation.

Observers have raised concerns over the implications of the dispute, warning that such developments could have broader consequences for political participation and democratic freedoms in the country.
