Oyo Lawmaker Exposes Alleged Plot to Impeach Governor Makinde, Cites Olubadan’s Role
A political firestorm has erupted in Oyo State following explosive allegations by a senior lawmaker that traditional and political figures are plotting to destabilize the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde through an impeachment scheme. The Chief Whip of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Gbenga Oyekola, made the revelations in a public statement issued on April 13, 2026, distancing himself from what he described as an orchestrated effort to set the legislature against the executive arm of government.

Hon. Gbenga Oyekola disclosed that the plot came to light during a crucial meeting of lawmakers held at the Governor’s House, where it was discovered that certain agents of disunity were actively working to undermine the cordial relationship between the House of Assembly and the state government.

The lawmaker revealed that the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, had been invited by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, after the Speaker had earlier sought the monarch’s support for his governorship ambition. According to Oyekola, the Olubadan advised the Speaker and allegedly offered to facilitate a House of Representatives ticket for him under the All Progressives Congress, along with financial backing to prosecute the election. The Speaker reportedly declined the offer.

Hon. Gbenga Oyekola further stated that the Speaker was also approached by the former First Lady of Oyo State, Chief Mrs. Florence Ajimobi, on a similar matter. The Speaker was allegedly offered money but refused and did not accept any inducement. The Chief Whip emphasised that he was neither involved in nor aware of any such meetings or arrangements, stressing his commitment to the current administration. “I, Hon. Gbenga Oyekola, hereby completely disassociate myself from any arrangement or activity that has the potential to disrupt the peace of Oyo State. I was never invited, never consulted, and was not part of any such meetings or arrangements. I cannot and will not be disloyal to my boss, His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde,” Oyekola said.

In a dramatic twist, former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has linked the impeachment rumours to a broader political battle, alleging that Governor Makinde is actually plotting to remove Oba Rashidi Ladoja as the Olubadan of Ibadan. Fayose insisted that the accusations against the monarch are part of an orchestration to prepare grounds for the Olubadan to be queried for being partisan. “Those who are still in doubt about Governor Seyi Makinde’s plot to remove the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rahidi Adewolu Ladoja, should just keep their fingers crossed and follow unfolding events. Recall that they denied any rift between Olubadan and Makinde after my making same public. But now, they are accusing the Olubadan of plotting to impeach Governor Makinde. They are also releasing statements accusing the Olubadan of being partisan. These are parts of the orchestration by Makinde to prepare grounds for the Olubadan to be queried for being partisan,” Fayose wrote on his official social media handle.
Meanwhile, several other lawmakers have publicly declared their loyalty to Governor Makinde. Hon. Saminu Riliwan Gbadamosi, popularly known as Wale Canada, representing Atisbo Saki-East State Constituency, affirmed his unwavering support for the governor and distanced himself from the impeachment rumours, stating that his loyalty to Makinde remains absolute. The Oyo State Governor and the Olubadan have both rejected claims of any plot to remove the monarch from his position. Hon. Gbenga Oyekola concluded his statement by reaffirming his commitment to the peace, unity, and continued progress of the state, saying, “I vote for peace in Oyo State at all times.” Political observers note that the crisis could heighten tensions in the state’s political landscape as more lawmakers are expected to declare their positions in the coming days.
