Benin Opposition Candidate Hounkpe Concedes Defeat Ahead of Official Results
The opposition candidate in Benin’s presidential election, Paul Hounkpe, has conceded defeat to Romuald Wadagni, the ruling coalition’s flag-bearer and long-serving Finance Minister, even before the official announcement of results from Sunday’s poll.

Wadagni, who has served for about a decade as Finance Minister under outgoing President Patrice Talon, is widely regarded as the continuity candidate of the governing bloc.
The early concession by Hounkpe comes amid expectations that the ruling coalition has secured a decisive advantage in the vote, though electoral authorities are yet to formally declare the final outcome.
In reaction, civil society organisations and key opposition groups have described the result as unsurprising. They argue that the political environment in Benin over the past decade has been marked by the exclusion of parts of the opposition and a gradual narrowing of civic space.
They further point to sweeping constitutional and electoral reforms introduced during the Talon administration as factors that have significantly reshaped the country’s political landscape ahead of the election.
