Iran’s national football team delivered a powerful and emotional tribute to victims of a devastating school airstrike ahead of their international friendly against Nigeria, casting a sombre shadow over the encounter in Belek, Turkey.

Before kick-off, the Iranian players wore black armbands and held symbolic school bags during the national anthem to honour at least 170 victims, many of them children and teachers killed in the February 28 strike in Minab, southern Iran.

Leading the tribute was forward Mehdi Taremi, who joined teammates in displaying pink and purple rucksacks tied with ribbons, representing the young lives lost in the tragedy.

Despite the emotional pre-match scene, the game went on, with Nigeria’s Super Eagles securing a 2-1 victory in the friendly encounter.

The airstrike, which occurred on the opening day of a wider Middle East conflict involving the United States and Israel, has sparked global outrage and conflicting narratives.

Iranian authorities have squarely blamed the United States, describing the attack as deliberate. However, a report by The New York Times indicated that preliminary findings from a U.S. military investigation suggest the strike may have been the result of a targeting error involving a Tomahawk cruise missile aimed at a nearby Iranian base. The report noted that outdated coordinates may have led to the school being mistakenly hit.

U.S. President Donald Trump had initially suggested Iran could have been responsible for the explosion, a claim widely disputed given the type of weapon reportedly used.

Meanwhile, tensions continue to spill into the sporting arena. Iran, already qualified for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, has requested that its matches be moved from the United States to Mexico, citing fears for the safety of its players following remarks by Trump warning of potential risks.
