A grassroots fundraising drive dominated by low income contributors has generated about ₦188 million in support of Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan’s anticipated 2027 governorship ambition in Yobe State, spotlighting a growing shift in political financing dynamics.

The fundraising event, held Sunday in Damaturu, drew attention not just for the amount raised, but for the source of contributions, many of which came in small sums from ordinary citizens including widows, students, traders, and mechanic apprentices.

In a statement issued Monday and signed by his Media Adviser, Ezrel Tabiowo, Senator Lawan, who represents Yobe North Senatorial District and is a former Senate President, described the initiative as a “redefinition of grassroots political participation.”

The exercise was spearheaded by the Coalition of Yobe East Progressive Youths, led by Dr. Mohammed Goni Yerima, with funds raised through a mix of pledges, cash donations, and bank transfers into a designated account.

Observers say the pattern of donations, largely ranging between ₦100 and ₦3,000, signals an attempt to frame the campaign as people driven at a time when concerns over elite dominated political financing continue to dominate public discourse.

“This is not just about raising money for nomination forms; it reflects a broader narrative of community ownership and participatory politics,” Lawan said, noting that the widespread involvement of low income earners was the most “touching” aspect of the exercise.

He added that the contributions represent an endorsement of his vision for “an open, accountable, and transparent government” in Yobe State.

While the fundraiser underscores strong early mobilization ahead of the 2027 election cycle, it also raises questions about whether such grassroots driven financing models could reshape campaign strategies in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
