ADC Holds National Convention as Accreditation Begins Amid Tight Security and Venue Controversy

Accreditation has commenced at the Rainbow Event Centre, Garki, Abuja, as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) begins its national convention, with delegates arriving from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Security operatives mounted tight checks at the entrance of the venue, as accreditation teams began verifying delegates ahead of the party’s key internal political gathering.

No fewer than 3,000 delegates are expected at the convention, which party officials say is aimed at concluding congress processes, ratifying a new constitution, and preparing for future elections.

Speaking at the venue, the party’s National Organising Secretary, Chinedu Idigo, said delegate allocation was structured to ensure equitable representation across states based on size and party structure.

However, Idigo raised concerns over difficulties encountered in securing a venue for the convention, alleging that the party faced repeated rejections and external pressure on facility owners.

He said requests to use major public venues, including Eagle Square and the Velodrome at the National Stadium, were denied without explanation, forcing the party to settle for a private event centre.

According to him, even after securing the Rainbow Event Centre, there were alleged attempts to compel cancellation of the booking, describing the situation as troubling for democratic participation.

Idigo also criticised what he described as intimidation of private business owners, warning that such interference undermines political freedom and fair competition in the democratic process.

Despite the challenges, the party said the convention is proceeding under the theme “So the Nation May Work,” with delegates expressing optimism about the outcome of the exercise.

The convention is expected to play a key role in reshaping the party’s internal structure and positioning ahead of future national elections.
