The Philippines is edging closer to a major political showdown as Vice President Sara Duterte faces a possible impeachment vote in Congress following a finding of probable cause by lawmakers.

A key committee in the House of Representatives unanimously ruled that there is sufficient basis to impeach Duterte, advancing the case to a plenary vote when Congress reconvenes.

If at least one-third of lawmakers support the move, the impeachment complaint will be transmitted to the Senate, where a full trial would determine her political fate. Conviction could lead to her removal from office and a lifetime ban from holding public office.

The impeachment complaints, filed by civil society groups and political activists, accuse Duterte of misusing public funds, amassing unexplained wealth, and issuing threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his family.

Duterte has denied all allegations, describing the proceedings as politically motivated. Her legal team has also questioned the process, arguing that the committee overstepped its constitutional role during deliberations.

The impeachment push comes amid a deepening political rift between Duterte and Marcos, former allies who won the 2022 elections on a joint ticket but have since fallen out. Analysts say the growing feud has intensified political tensions in the country.

The case also carries broader implications for the Philippines’ political landscape. Duterte, who has declared her intention to run for president in 2028, could see her ambitions derailed if the impeachment process succeeds.

This marks the latest chapter in a prolonged impeachment saga. A previous attempt to remove Duterte in 2025 was nullified by the Supreme Court on procedural grounds, paving the way for fresh complaints after the constitutional one-year bar expired.

As the process moves to the House floor, attention will now turn to whether lawmakers will secure enough votes to escalate the case into a full Senate trial; an outcome that could reshape the country’s political future.
