Adeyanju Dares Obasanjo to Write Open Letter Criticising Tinubu

Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has challenged former President Olusegun Obasanjo to write an open letter criticising President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing the former leader of engineering the exit of opposition figures Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso from the African Democratic Congress.

Adeyanju, in a post on his X handle, said Obasanjo has yet to write an open letter criticising Tinubu as he did to former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and the late Muhammadu Buhari.

He argued that Obasanjo was responsible for Obi and Kwankwaso leaving the ADC coalition, further dividing the opposition.

The activist noted that ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar had accused Obasanjo of working for his tribesman, and challenged the former president to prove the allegation wrong by writing an open letter to Tinubu.

“This is the best time for OBJ to prove that he is not by writing an open letter to Tinubu,” Adeyanju wrote.

His challenge follows claims by former Obasanjo political adviser Akin Osuntokun that the former president fully supports the Obi/Kwankwaso ticket for the 2027 presidency and is the main sponsor of the coalition.

Osuntokun, who was Director-General of Peter Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign, said Obasanjo had wanted the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket earlier but things did not work out.

“If you can say that Obasanjo is supporting any ticket, it is the Peter Obi-Kwankwaso ticket. As a matter of fact, he is the principal sponsor of that ticket,” Osuntokun said.

The Yoruba Ronu Leadership Forum had also accused Obasanjo of undermining the opposition and working covertly for Tinubu’s re-election, alleging that his public support for Obi and Kwankwaso was a smokescreen to mask his backing for the APC administration.

The group claimed Obasanjo encouraged political realignments that led to defections to the NDC when it became clear Obi would not emerge as ADC’s presidential candidate.

Obasanjo had also made allegations against Atiku in a recent letter to former Ogun Governor Segun Osoba, which critics argued was a deliberate attack against the opposition rather than just an attack on Atiku.

Osuntokun dismissed suggestions that Obasanjo was secretly working for Tinubu, describing such claims as “absolute bunkum.”
