Drone Footage Shows Massive Fire Devastating Malaysian Coastal Village
A massive fire has torn through a coastal village in Sabah state, Malaysia, destroying hundreds of homes and displacing thousands of residents, according to local authorities.

The blaze broke out in the early hours of Sunday in a densely populated waterfront settlement in Sandakan, spreading rapidly due to strong winds and the close proximity of wooden structures.

Officials say more than 200 homes were destroyed, although some reports and drone footage suggest the scale of destruction could be significantly higher, with entire sections of the village reduced to ashes.
Dramatic aerial footage circulating online shows thick black smoke billowing into the sky as flames engulf rows of houses, highlighting the intensity and speed of the fire.
Emergency responders battled the inferno for hours, but efforts were hampered by limited water access due to low tide conditions, as well as the tightly packed layout of the settlement.
Authorities confirmed that thousands of residents have been displaced, with temporary shelters being arranged for those affected. No casualties have been officially reported at the time of filing this report.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Fires in coastal and stilt-house communities in Southeast Asia often spread quickly due to the use of flammable building materials and closely built homes, raising ongoing concerns about fire safety in such areas.
