17-Year-Old Wanted for Attempted Murder in Iowa Campus Shooting
Authorities in University of Iowa are searching for a 17-year-old suspect wanted in connection with a shooting that left five people injured in a busy nightlife district.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday in downtown Iowa City’s pedestrian mall, a popular area lined with bars and restaurants near the campus. According to police, the violence followed a large street fight involving dozens of individuals.
Investigators say the teenage suspect allegedly broke away from the altercation and fired multiple gunshots into a crowd, striking five people. Three of the victims are believed to be students of the University of Iowa.
One of the victims, a woman, remains in critical condition after suffering a life-threatening head injury, while another is hospitalized in stable condition. The remaining three victims have been treated and discharged.
Police confirmed that the victims were not the intended targets and were likely bystanders caught in the chaos. Officers reportedly arrived at the scene within seconds of receiving reports of the initial fight, but gunfire had already erupted.
An arrest warrant has been issued for the suspect, who is from Cedar Rapids. Prosecutors say he will face multiple counts of attempted murder and could be charged as an adult under Iowa law once apprehended.
Authorities have executed dozens of search warrants and say more charges may follow as investigations continue. Police are urging members of the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the suspect’s arrest.
