The legal team of detained Myanmar former leader Aung San Suu Kyi is set to meet with her this weekend, marking a significant development after years of restricted access under military rule.

The planned meeting follows her recent transfer from prison to house arrest in the capital, Naypyidaw, by Myanmar’s military-backed government. Legal representatives say the visit; expected to take place on Sunday, will allow them to discuss her legal situation and deliver essential supplies, including food and medicine.

Suu Kyi, 80, has been in detention since the military coup of February 2021, which removed her elected civilian government and plunged the Southeast Asian nation into prolonged political turmoil and conflict.

Her lawyers described the upcoming engagement as more than a routine prison visit, noting that her relocation to house arrest could enable more direct and meaningful discussions about her legal standing.

Following a series of closed-door trials widely criticized by her allies and international observers as politically motivated, Suu Kyi was initially sentenced to 33 years in prison on multiple charges, including corruption and election-related offences.

However, her sentence has been gradually reduced through a series of amnesties granted by the military authorities. The latest reductions announced in April, cut her jail term further before her transfer out of prison.

The move to house arrest, alongside the planned meeting with her legal team, comes amid increasing international pressure on Myanmar’s junta, led by Min Aung Hlaing, to release political prisoners and re-engage with regional partners such as ASEAN.

Despite the shift, analysts caution that the development may represent a tactical adjustment rather than a broader political breakthrough, as Suu Kyi remains under detention and the country continues to grapple with a deepening political and humanitarian crisis.

The upcoming meeting will be the first known direct interaction between Suu Kyi and her legal team since her relocation, raising cautious expectations about possible changes in her legal strategy and detention conditions.
