US President Donald Trump has deleted a controversial AI-generated image portraying himself as a Christ-like figure following widespread backlash, including criticism from key conservative Christian supporters.

The image, which was shared on his social media platform Truth Social, depicted Trump in flowing robes with divine light emanating from his hands as he appeared to heal a man in a hospital bed. The post quickly drew outrage, particularly among religious groups who described it as inappropriate and offensive.

Among the critics were conservative commentators and media personalities who questioned the intent behind the post, with some labeling it “blasphemous” and calling for its immediate removal. Even prominent allies expressed discomfort, marking a rare moment of public dissent from Trump’s support base.

Trump later defended the post, insisting it was not meant to portray him as Jesus Christ, but rather as a doctor “making people better.” He added that the image was intended humorously, though it failed to resonate with many viewers.

The controversy came amid an ongoing verbal clash between Trump and Pope Leo XIV, whom the US president had earlier criticized as “weak on crime.” The pope, in turn, has spoken out against global conflicts and what he described as misguided political leadership.

The backlash extended beyond media figures to Trump’s own platform, where users typically supportive also voiced disapproval. The image had originally circulated online months earlier before being reshared and altered.

Vice President JD Vance downplayed the controversy, describing the post as a joke that had been misunderstood.

The incident has sparked broader debate about the use of artificial intelligence in political messaging and the sensitivities surrounding religious imagery, especially in a deeply polarized political and cultural climate.
