A former anchor with Arise News, Dr. Chiogo Constance Ikokwu, has defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), citing the need for strategic political positioning ahead of party primaries.

Ikokwu, who is aspiring to represent Idemili North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, announced her defection in a statement titled “A Strategic Realignment for Purposeful Service.”

She described the decision as difficult but necessary, given the shifting dynamics within Nigeria’s political space and the limited time before primary elections.

“The last few days have been quite hectic, especially in light of the limited time remaining for party primaries across the country,” she said.

Ikokwu noted that her decision was influenced by ongoing political realignments, particularly in her home state of Anambra State, where she said recent developments have significantly altered the political landscape.

“I had to make a quick and tough decision to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) after careful reflection. With the level of uncertainty, shifting alliances, and ongoing realignments across the political space, it is important to find a platform that is stable, forward-looking, and aligned with the vision for meaningful engagement,” she stated.

She added that key members of the political coalition she identifies with have also aligned with the NDC, making her transition both “timely and necessary.”

According to Ikokwu, her primary goal remains effective representation and service delivery to her constituents.

“This move is about positioning—ensuring that I am on a platform that offers the right atmosphere, strength, and opportunity needed to translate commitment into tangible service and impact for my constituency,” she said.
