Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress, has constituted a screening panel for governorship aspirants, with the party’s National Chairman appointed to head the committee.

The development is seen as part of the party’s preparations for upcoming governorship elections and internal primary processes across affected states. Party officials said the committee would be responsible for assessing the qualifications, eligibility and preparedness of aspirants seeking to contest under the APC platform.

According to sources within the party, the screening exercise is expected to focus on compliance with constitutional requirements, party loyalty, electoral viability and other internal guidelines established by the APC leadership.

The panel is also expected to work closely with the party’s National Working Committee to ensure transparency and credibility throughout the process. Political observers believe the decision to place the National Chairman at the head of the committee signals the importance the party attaches to the screening exercise.

Although details of all members of the committee were still emerging at the time of reporting, party insiders said the screening process would begin in line with the timetable already released by the APC ahead of the elections.

The ruling party has continued consultations across different states as aspirants intensify campaigns and political negotiations ahead of the governorship contests. Analysts say the outcome of the screening exercise could play a major role in shaping the APC’s chances in key states during the elections.
