French President Emmanuel Macron briefly interrupted a speaker during the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, after becoming visibly frustrated with noise and side conversations from the audience.

The incident occurred during a youth-focused cultural session at the summit hosted at the University of Nairobi, where African leaders, entrepreneurs, artists and young innovators had gathered to discuss issues surrounding culture, technology and Africa’s future.

As background chatter in the hall continued while a speaker addressed attendees, Macron rose from his seat, walked toward the stage and took the microphone to call for order. Witnesses said the French leader appeared irritated by the growing noise in the auditorium.

“Hey, hey, hey… I’m sorry guys, but it’s impossible to speak about culture and people coming here and making a speech with such noise. This is a total lack of respect,” Macron told the audience in English. He also advised attendees holding side conversations to either move to separate meeting rooms or continue discussions outside the venue.

The audience later applauded after Macron’s intervention, allowing the event to continue in a quieter atmosphere. Some participants and online commentators praised the French president for defending the speakers and demanding respect during the discussions.

The Africa Forward Summit, co-hosted by France and Kenya, brought together more than 30 African leaders, business executives and young entrepreneurs as France seeks to strengthen political, economic and cultural ties across the continent.

Videos of the moment quickly spread across social media platforms, sparking mixed reactions online. While many users supported Macron’s actions as necessary to maintain order, others viewed the intervention as overly stern during a youth-centered event.
