English golfer Aaron Rai has etched his name into golf history after becoming the first English-born player in more than a century to win the PGA Championship.

The 31-year-old produced a sensational final-round performance at Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania on Sunday, finishing at nine-under-par to secure his maiden major title and end a 107-year wait for an English champion in the tournament.

Rai delivered a composed and clinical display under pressure, shooting a five-under 65 in the final round to finish three shots clear of Spain’s Jon Rahm and American golfer Alex Smalley.

The Wolverhampton-born golfer produced several defining moments during the closing stretch, including a remarkable 68-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole that effectively sealed the victory. Earlier in the round, Rai had also drained a 40-foot eagle putt on the ninth to spark his title charge.

The victory marks Rai’s first major championship and only his second PGA Tour title following his breakthrough win at the Wyndham Championship in 2024.

Rai’s triumph also places him among a select group of golfers of Indian heritage to capture a major championship title. His disciplined approach and calm demeanor drew praise from fellow professionals and golf analysts after overcoming a world-class field that included Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, and reigning stars of the sport.

The Englishman’s historic win is already being celebrated as one of the biggest moments in modern British golf, with many describing it as a breakthrough achievement that could inspire a new generation of golfers in England
